When we have the skills to discuss difficult topics with parents and support children with additional needs, we feel more empowered in our expertise as educators.
This training will cover three key areas:
Understanding the child – through a sensory foundation lens
Supporting educators to consider the child’s sensory and emotional development and its connection to how they function in their educational setting and facilitate reflection around behaviours and relationships
Understanding the parent – collaboration and how to deal with tricky conversations
When supporting children, we need to talk with parents when we have concerns. All parents will react and respond differently so having a collaborative approach for communicating and entering these discussions thoughtfully, is essential.
Some hot topics to cover will be:
- Setting boundaries when parents are needing a lot of support
- Getting engagement from avoidant or passive parents
- Supporting parents who are anxious
- Parents who arrive late
Understanding yourself – thinking through burnout
Working in occupations that involve caring for people can be incredibly meaningful work. However, ‘caring’ work can lead to compassion fatigue or burnout, especially when educators cannot recharge from their work. This training involves practical approaches to identifying risks and strategies to reduce the impact of working with children.
